Read Synopsis

On December 17th, 1957, it was LIGHTS OUT on “The Nat ‘King’ Cole Show.”

Despite being the voice that built Capitol Records, Nat “King” Cole’s groundbreaking television show was rejected by Madison Avenue, unwilling to sponsor America’s first black television host. Now, on the night of his final broadcast, Nat must grapple with the complexities of his psyche, personified by his best friend and alter-ego, Sammy Davis Jr., and decide whether to quietly step out of the spotlight or go out with a bang.

Tony and Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo (Rustin, Sing Sing) and NYTW Usual Suspect and Artistic Director Patricia McGregor (The Refuge Plays) bring us this electrifying exploration of the soul of an American icon who fought to break through America’s color barrier in the early days of television. Starring Emmy Award nominee Dulé Hill (“The West Wing,” “Psych”) as Nat “King” Cole and Tony nominee Daniel J. Watts (The Refuge Plays, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) as Sammy Davis Jr., LIGHTS OUT features Nat’s hit songs, like “Nature Boy,” “It’s a Good Day,” “Smile” and “Unforgettable” with music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by John McDaniel, and choreography by Edgar Godineaux (City Center’s Jelly’s Last Jam) with Tap Choreography by Jared Grimes (Funny Girl).

Katie O’Neill / Costume Designer

KATIE O’NEILL is a costume designer that connects under-resourced school and community theaters to the resources of their local professional theaters. Working at large theaters on the forefront of production like the Guthrie, ACT, OSF, Berkeley Rep, Yale Rep and the Huntington she builds worlds in collaboration with the country’s most skilled theater artists. Katie then develops adaptable design approaches that help school theaters produce meaningful work that resonates with their communities and students – making the production of exciting new works and innovative productions of classics possible in amateur settings. She holds a BA in Theater from Temple University and an MFA in Design from Yale. She does not hold a degree from Empire Beauty School because Katie is a beauty school drop-out. She received all of this professional training for free. As such, Katie advocates for a theatrical ecosystem where innovative new works can thrive in educational settings, creating meaningful artistic experiences for the next generation of theater artists and audiences – affordably, for everyone. Other work with Patricia McGregor includes “Romeo and Juliet,” “In the Meantime,” “Blood Dazzler,” and “The House That Will Not Stand” – all exciting productions that adapt beautifully to school settings. Katie expands the repertoire available to educational institutions beyond the standard canon by sharing tickets and resources daily on TheaterGoingHabit.substack.com.

Alex Hawthorn / Co Sound Designer

Alex Hawthorn (they/them) is an artist whose work flows between performance, installation,
object-making, and sound-making. As a non-binary interdisciplinary artist, Hawthorn is most
comfortable outside prescriptive boxes, allowing their research to shape the form and medium
of their projects. They use their work as a lens through which to investigate the natural world,
specifically focusing on time: how we experience it, how we have codified it, and how we exist
within it.  Hawthorn’s recent research has focused on extremely long timescales: from the
geological to the galactic.

Hawthorn received an MFA in Art and Technology & Composition and Experimental Sound
Practices from the California Institute of the Arts and a BFA in theater from New York
University’s Tisch School of the Arts.  They have performed at festivals in the United States and
internationally, most recently as part of Manifest:IO in Berlin, Germany.  Hawthorn’s work in
theatrical sound design has garnered them an Obie award, LA Ovation Awards, and has been
heard across North and South America, Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Their work has been featured in Live Design Magazine, Stage Directions Magazine, and
Performance Research Journal, and they contributed to Imagining Transmedia, published by
MIT Press.
As an artist with the Brooklyn-based Obie-award-winning experimental performance company
Theater Mitu for over 15 years, they have co-authored works that explore death, religion, and
futurity, including Mitu’s 2021 piece, Utopian Hotline, which is included in the Lunar Codex, an
archive of contemporary art deposited on the Moon.
Hawthorn has been a guest lecturer at Yale School of Drama and Emerson College and is
adjunct faculty at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and special faculty at the California Institute of

Teaching Nat King Cole to Tap Dance

LA Dance Chronicle

Many Cole hits receive their due but tap dance receives a special, if unexpected spotlight when Dulé Hill (West Wing, Stick Fly, Bring in ‘da Noise Bring in ‘da Funk) as the famously non-dancing Nat King Cole is drawn into a tap dance by Daniel J. Watts (Hamilton, Memphis) as Sammy Davis Jr.

Dulé Hill visits “The House that Nat Built”

Geffen Playhouse

Universal Music Enterprises invited Dulé to lay down some tracks at Capitol Studios using the same piano that Nat performed on for most of his iconic recordings. He jumped at the opportunity. “It feels as if I’m on hallowed ground. Sacred–it feels anointed,” said Dulé from inside the recording studio.

Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole was originally commissioned and produced by People’s Light, Malvern, PA (Abigail Adams, Artistic Director/CEO; Ellen Anderson, General Manager/CFO; Zak Berkman, Producing Director).

The original development and premiere of Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole was supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and produced by Geffen Playhouse (Matt Shakman, Artistic Director; Gil Cates, Jr., Executive Director).
