The 2024/25 Youth Artistic Instigators present A TRIPTYCH OF TIME

“In order to rise from its own ashes a phoenix first must burn.”
— Octavia Butler in Parable of the Sower

A TRIPTYCH OF TIME is a journey into our past, near future, and future. This story, told in a triptych of vignettes, explores the resilience of humanity throughout times of uncertainty. What roles do hope and connection play in our lives? How will we access knowledge and truth in the future? What does community look like in the future? Collectively created and written by the Youth Artistic Instigators, this devised piece of theatre draws inspiration from Octavia Butler’s forecast of the future she imagined for 2024-2027 in her 1993 novel, Parable of the Sower. Performed by an energetic youth ensemble, this piece compares the accuracy and inaccuracy of Butler’s vision, adding both new concern and optimism for our trajectory as a society.

The Fourth Street Theatre is accessed by climbing eight steps from street level. Unfortunately, the building is not equipped with an elevator.

The Youth Artistic Instigators brings together high school students from across the greater NYC area to create bold, activist theatre. At workshops and rehearsals, the ensemble collaborates to write and perform an original piece of theatre that responds to urgent current events, builds community and advocates for social justice—all while having fun in the process.
