For more than 45 years, we’ve been producing theatre that animates, challenges and celebrates the world we live in. Through this work, we not only build shows, but also community.

While we may be best known for award-winning work—Rent; Merrily We Roll Along; On Sugarland; Hadestown; Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord; Here There Are Blueberries and so many more—they represent a fraction of what we do in our unique home in the East Village.

A WORKSHOP FOR ARTISTS
Last year, we served 400 artists with readings, workshops, summer residencies and year-long fellowships. As one of the few remaining robust artistic incubators in the city, we know how vital developmental programming is to the ecosystem of our field. For artists at all stages of their careers, this support empowers them to take risks, test ideas and create art that pushes boundaries.

A WORKSHOP FOR STUDENTS
For many artists, the journey begins as a student. At a time when funding for arts education continues to be cut, we fill a critical need for more than 1,100 young people in our schools each year. We engage them with classroom residencies, student matinees, year-long fellowships and two unique programs: Youth Artistic Instigators, a free afterschool program for teens, and Mind the Gap, an intergenerational playwriting program.

A WORKSHOP FOR YOU
We believe in showing up for anyone curious enough to take a seat in our theatre. We seek to be a hyper-local organization with global impact, where every community member feels invited and welcome. We want to expand our reach, bringing theatrical experiences outside of the East Village to meet people where they are. In the coming year, you’ll see us launch new programming and cement local partnerships.

We’re dreaming big despite the financial challenges for our field at this time. Multiple organizations have ceased operations, some have merged, and some—like NYTW—face deficits due to increased production costs and radical shifts in our revenue streams. Throughout tough conversations and difficult budget cuts, one thing is clear—we will continue to show up for what’s important.

Today, we’re harnessing the power of our community—we’re asking you to show up too. Show up for artists. Show up for arts education. Show up for New York Theatre Workshop. Your generosity will not only protect our existing programs but will also allow us to dream big and provide a space for artists to do the same.
